DEWALT Heavy Duty DC618HA XRP 18V 16 GA 20 Degree Angled Finish Nailer / 1/2-Inch Cordless Hammerdrill Drill/Driver Combo Kit (reconditioned cordless drills) Overview

When pneumatic tools first became popular, we thought that was pretty much the best innovation ever. Now that’s what we’re saying about the finish nailer in this great combo kit, because it combines the ultimate power of pneumatics with the unparalleled convenience of cordless technology.

This 16-gauge nailer packs in the absolute best of both worlds, giving you the ease of air-powered nailing but the freedom of cordless tools: no compressor, no hoses, no electricity, no generator. And the best part is that you sacrifice nothing for all the gains.

This nailer gives you both sequential firing for exact placement as well as a bump-fire mode that shoots as fast as you can go. We like the six-position dial that lets you move between workpieces without having to adjust the exact depth setting. Loading nails is fast and easy as can be, and the angled magazine holds 110 20-degree nails. Should you experience a jam, clearing it is quick and tool-free.

Perhaps the greatest innovation is the absence of fuel cells with this technology; though they definitely get the job done, they’re expensive and take some care to maintain. With this nailer, all you need is a charged battery. The tradeoff, we suppose, is that this is heavier than a standard pneumatic, of course, but quite honestly, we didn’t mind.

This hammerdrill is a great tool on its own, but it just gets a bit overshadowed by the nailer in this duo. Still, it’s a hardworking brute that handles and balances beautifully and packs a patented three-speed transmission that gets you from 0 to 2,000 rpm in drill mode and 0 to 34,000 blows per minute in hammer mode. The half-inch Rohm chuck grabs the bit with carbide jaws and centers it quickly, then locks it in place with its ratcheting system. We were surprised at how very little vibration is felt, even at max. The 360-degree handle is a nice feature that adds perfect control, and we found the fit and finish of the whole drill just superb.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
